oday, several organizations recognize the advantages of connecting their businesses to an Internet Exchange Point (IXP). To reiterate, IXPs stabilize network connections, reduce latency, and help manage infrastructure-related budgets when connecting between peering members. However, choosing the right peering model can be challenging, more specifically bilateral and multilateral peering. Additionally, they may lack clarity on which type aligns best with their business objectives.

Today, Thailand IX will explain the distinctions between the two peering types, including their practical applications. We will show that there is no universally optimal peering type for your business; rather, you can select the one that aligns with your specific requirements and business objectives.

Why Peering Type Matters

"Close-up

n the interconnected era, the Internet has become a vital part of modern business operations. Whether it comes to cloud computing, digital content distribution, or the advancement of generative AI, the Internet plays a pivotal role. Consequently, the demand for a stable Internet connection has emerged as one of the most sought-after necessities in the present day.

Given that IXP can significantly improve the stability of the interconnectivity of organizations, selecting the appropriate peering type will have a substantial impact on the outcomes of the connection. These outcomes include latency, scalability, stability, and cost optimization.

Mentioning in the first section, there are two peering types of the Internet exchange, bilateral peering and multilateral peering. Both of them have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, depending on the specific use cases and objectives.

Multilateral Peering: Single Connection, Multiple Members

"A

Starting with the simplest form of the peering type, multilateral peering. This peering type is connecting multiple peering members with a single connection to route server. With this type, your business can take advantage of the Internet exchange by connecting to members with ease. In other words, multilateral peering is like multiple streams of rivers join together into one river making the traffic flow between piers (or network) easier.

One significant advantage of this approach is that it can simplify network configuration, resulting in cost and efficiency savings for the IXP connection, irrespective of the location of peering members, whether they are local or global members connected to the same route server.

"ผังการเชื่อมต่อแบบ

However, there are several limitations to this type of connection. For instance, multilateral peering cannot connect to peering members providing selective peering policy, and vice versa. Moreover, if your business requires larger bandwidth to specific member, this will be a big bottleneck for communicate with the rest.

As a result, multilateral peering has some limitations. Still, it is the first step for connecting your business to the world with least friction. For Thailand IX, we provide this type of peering with our public peering services (formerly known as local peering). Our public peering can connect to over 60 members domestically and internationally.

You can learn more about public peering service on this page.

Bilateral Peering: Specialized Connectivity for Greater Stability

"Detailed

Bilateral peering is a peering model based on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), where connectivity is established in a one-to-one (1:1) manner between two networks. This approach involves selecting specific peering partners, submitting peering requests, and establishing direct BGP sessions once both organizations approve the connection.

From a physical connectivity perspective, bilateral peering can be implemented using two primary models:

"ผังการเชื่อมต่อแบบ

Private Network Interconnection (PNI)

Private Network Interconnection (PNI) is a physical connection established over fiber-optic links without traversing an Internet Exchange Point (IXP). This model provides a direct connection between two endpoints, allowing organizations to maintain full control over routing paths and traffic flows.

PNI also enables organizations to customize bandwidth based on their operational requirements. In scenarios where both parties exchange large volumes of traffic, PNI is often the most cost-effective option for sustained high-bandwidth connectivity.

However, PNI comes with certain limitations. Establishing a PNI typically involves more complex setup processes, including cross-connects between routers or network switches at both endpoints, as well as dedicated fiber deployment.

"Detailed

Public Peering Interconnection (PPI)

Public Peering Interconnection (PPI), in contrast, leverages an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) as the physical transport layer between two networks. Unlike multilateral peering, bilateral peering over PPI establishes a direct one-to-one BGP session between the two parties without relying on a route server.

This model allows organizations to use existing IXP infrastructure for cross-connects, reducing deployment complexity and initial costs—particularly when bandwidth requirements are moderate.

One limitation of bilateral peering over PPI is that bandwidth is shared within the IXP fabric. As traffic volume with a specific peer increases, overall costs may rise accordingly, especially when higher bandwidth capacity is required.

For organizations seeking the benefits of bilateral peering while leveraging IXP infrastructure, Thailand IX provides Private Peering services over PPI, offering flexible connectivity options tailored to both technical and business requirements.

Which Peering Type is Right for Your Business?

"A

At this point, you might be wondering which peering type should you choose for your business. The answer is not straightforward as you might think. As we discussed earlier, there is no perfect peering type that fully meets your business’s requirements. However, we can provide some guidelines for your organization.

If you are working in cloud service providers or content-oriented providers, bilateral peering is a great choice for your business. Since this type of business demands wider bandwidth, lower latency, and more stable connectivity than usual, this peering type can improve those aspects directly.

On the other hand, if you are the Internet Service Providers (ISPs), region-wide network infrastructures, startups or Software-as-a-Service companies, or even the organizations wanting to enhance global connectivity, multilateral peering is the perfect choice for your business.

In practice, there are several organizations taking hybrid approach when it comes to peering types. In day-to-day connectivity, multilateral peering is their go-to choice for connecting their business most of the time. However, if they want to connect to peering members that have high traffic or selective peering policy, bilateral peering will be their obvious choice.

Regardless of which peering types you choose, you can harness the world with the largest and most reputable neutral internet exchange in Thailand by connecting with Thailand IX. You can check our offerings through our services page.
